A local man was shot and killed Tuesday night by an Alexandria police officer during an incident near the Alexandria Levee Park Amphitheater, Chief Daren Coutee said today.
The incident took place when the officer, who has not been identified, approached the vehicle of Guy N. Wilson of Lula Lane because the officer believed Wilson and a single passenger in the front seat might have been involved in “suspicious activity,” Coutee said.
Coutee said that for reasons that have not been determined, gunfire broke out, leading to Wilson’s death.
“This is an unfortunate incident,” Coutee said. “Our condolences go out to the family of the deceased person. Whatever the person’s past or what that person might or not have been doing at the time, this is never a good thing ... we never want to shoot someone. That is the last resort.”
Police are awaiting the results of a scheduled autopsy and viewing of the officer's report of the incident before any action is made or charges filed, Coutee said.
Coutee said the officer was patrolling the levee area as part of the week-old “walking beat” program, in which officers do just that in the Elliott, Third, Fourth and Monroe street areas.
Coutee said the passenger was not harmed as a result of the shooting, which occurred about 8:30 p.m.
The "walking beat" program was implemented as a result of new businesses opening in the downtown area and the department noticing a number of panhandling complaints, Coutee said.
He said the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave with pay, pending investigation of the report and autopsy results. The officer has been with the department since August 2003, Coutee said.
Coutee said more details would be released sometime this afternoon.

Police investigating incident in which officer shot man to death on Alexandria levee

A local man was shot and killed Tuesday night by an Alexandria police officer during an incident near the Alexandria Levee Park Amphitheater, Chief Daren Coutee said today.
The incident took place when the officer, who has not been identified, approached the vehicle of Guy N. Wilson of Lula Lane because the officer believed Wilson and a single passenger in the front seat might have been involved in “suspicious activity,” Coutee said.
Coutee said that for reasons that have not been determined, gunfire broke out, leading to Wilson’s death.
“This is an unfortunate incident,” Coutee said. “Our condolences go out to the family of the deceased person. Whatever the person’s past or what that person might or not have been doing at the time, this is never a good thing ... we never want to shoot someone. That is the last resort.”
Police are awaiting the results of a scheduled autopsy and viewing of the officer's report of the incident before any action is made or charges filed, Coutee said.
Coutee said the officer was patrolling the levee area as part of the week-old “walking beat” program, in which officers do just that in the Elliott, Third, Fourth and Monroe street areas.
Coutee said the passenger was not harmed as a result of the shooting, which occurred about 8:30 p.m.
The "walking beat" program was implemented as a result of new businesses opening in the downtown area and the department noticing a number of panhandling complaints, Coutee said.
He said the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave with pay, pending investigation of the report and autopsy results. The officer has been with the department since August 2003, Coutee said.
Coutee said more details would be released sometime this afternoon.

thanks, we are wondering what the deal is with that it would suck if the cops are confronting everyone down there. once years ago we were running errands in town and pulled into the city park to chill for a few minutes. soon an apd car passed by slowly the cop went by then right out of sight he turned around it was quick cos he had just went out of sight when he came back round again really slow checking us out, like he was gonna catch us (thinking the coast was clear) drinking beer or taking a hit off a joint or something lol... there was absolutely nothing going on in the park. we werent playing the radio or trying to flag people down etc... he was just being a prick. you see scrutinizing us like we are a criminals just for sitting there. ho hum.
